Kenneth Kaushansky of Northport has received the 2013 Ernest Beutler Lecture and Prize from the American Society of Hematology in recognition of his research in the discovery of thrombopoietin, the growth factor that regulates platelet production. Kaushansky, a past president of the society, is senior vice president for health sciences and dean of Stony Brook University School of Medicine as well as lead editor of "Williams Hematology," a textbook. He has also served as president of both the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Western Society for Clinical Investigation and a councilor of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the Association of American Physicians.
