Leslie Pieters of Merrick was recently named an Amazing Person in Physical Education by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance based on her "extraordinary commitment" to protecting the health of students and the community. Pieters is a physical education teacher at Roosevelt Middle School, where she has organized the school's health fair for the past three years. She also established the school's Green Team to encourage youth to take a leadership role in preserving the environment -- specifically Roosevelt Preserve.
