Peter Boonshaft of Garden City has received the 2011 George N. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education from the National Association for Music Education for his "collaborative spirit, enthusiasm and ability to instill qualities in students beyond the musical." Boonshaft, an association member, is a music professor and band director at Hofstra University in Hempstead and was previously a faculty member at the University of Hartford and Moravian College in Pennsylvania. He's also founder of the Pennsylvania Youth Honors Concert Band and Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble.
