Richard Schary of North Bellmore was recently inducted into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame for "service to improve the quality of life for Long Islanders." Schary, a retired New York City teacher, is founder of the Friends of Massapequa Preserve and has been involved with environmental efforts -- including co-founding a committee in 1997 to halt a planned golf course in Bethpage State Park. He's president of Nassau County Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and was instrumental in the formation of Trailview State Park and the Wantagh Nature Trail.
