Tom Karlya of Medford recently received the Making a Difference Award from the Diabetes Scholars Foundation based on his dedication and service to the field. Karlya, who has two children with Type 1 diabetes, is vice president of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation and creator of the Diabetes Diplomat Program, which educates more than 20,000 people annually about the disease. He is also a member of the Patchogue Lions Club, the Suffolk County Lions Diabetes Education Foundation, and the Patchogue Knights of Columbus.
