Lance Cpl. Tyquan Maness of West Hempstead has received the Outstanding Courage and Service to Nation and Community Award from the Village of Hempstead based on his service to the country. Maness, a 2007 graduate of Hempstead High School, is a lance corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and has served seven-month stints in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was injured in Afghanistan when he suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and now plans on taking online courses in criminal justice through Southern University in Louisiana.
