Simon Billinge

of Brooklyn has received the 2010 J.D. Hanawait Award from the International Centre for Powder Diffraction for his contribution to the field of X-ray powder diffraction, a technique that probes the structure of materials made of tiny crystals. Billinge is a senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton and a professor of materials science, applied physics and applied math at Columbia University.
