William Sampson of Bellport has received the award for applied superconductivity research from the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers for his "significant and sustained contributions in the field of applied superconductivity." Sampson, who was awarded $5,000, is a senior physicist at Brookhaven National

Laboratory, where he helps design

and build superconducting magnets that keep particle beams circulating

in accelerators.
