CENTRAL ISLIP / Man stable after being shot
A 23-year-old Central Islip man was in serious but stable condition at a hospital Friday after he was shot in the neck Thursday evening, police said.
Suffolk police said the man, who was not identified, was walking near the corner of East Elm Street and Prospect Avenue in Central Islip when a man approached him about 10:15 p.m., shot him and then fled. Police said the victim was able to flag down a passing driver, who took him to the Central Islip Fire Department.
Firefighters stabilized the victim, then took him to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said. Police said the investigation is continuing and have not released additional details.

PLAINVIEW / Pedestrian, 85, fatally hit
An 85-year-old woman was struck by a car and killed Thursday evening in Plainview, police said Friday.
Nassau police said Sylvia Rosenberg of Plainview was trying to cross Woodbury Road when a 2005 Acura, making a left turn onto the street from Stratford Road, struck her at 5:41 p.m. Police said Rosenberg suffered head trauma and was taken to a hospital, where she died Friday at 12:15 a.m.
The driver, who was not identified by police, was not charged.

EAST QUOGUE / Cause of house fire probed
Arson investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire in East Quogue, Southampton Town police said Friday.
The fire on Bayberry Lane was reported at 11:02 p.m. Thursday, and responders found that the two women who living there had gotten out, police said. Police, in a statement, said the mother of the middle-aged woman who owned the house was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for observation.
Police also said the fire was reported to arson investigators, who declined to comment Friday. The extent of damage was not known, and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
