The Long Island Rail Road said service was operating on or close to schedule shortly before 10 a.m. after a Monday morning rush hour of delays and cancellations related to signal trouble.

From about 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. trains on several branches were delayed or canceled because the signal issue in the West Side Yard restricted the LIRR's access to tracks, said spokesman Aaron Donovan.

Donovan said the signal problem was discovered about 4:45 a.m., and without being able to access a number of tracks in the yard congestion-related delays and cancellations resulted.

Branches affected included Babylon, Hempstead, Port Washington, Long Beach, West Hempstead, Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson.

The service sent an email alert shortly before 6 a.m. that customers should anticipate delays and cancellations because of the signal issue.

Later, at shortly after 8 a.m., the service said to expect scattered westbound delays of 5 to 10 minutes.
