LIRR Babylon line on or close to schedule, rail repaired

A broken rail east of the Freeport station that caused delays to Wednesday morning rush-hour service on the Babylon Branch of the Long Island Rail Road has been repaired, railroad officials said.

Just after 10:45 a.m., officials said that service on the branch was "on or close" to schedule -- that after westbound trains were delayed up to 20 minutes during the morning rush.

Westbound morning rush-hour trains made all local stops between Babylon and Jamaica, according to the railroad.

At least seven eastbound and westbound trains were affected by the broken rail, among them: the 7:45 a.m., 8:03 a.m., 8:16 a.m., 8:37 a.m., 9:06 a.m. and 9:35 a.m. trains from Babylon; and the 9:22 a.m. train from Penn Station to Babylon, which was 16 minutes late according to the railroad.

The cause of the broken rail is being investigated.
