The Long Island Rail Road website was reporting good service Monday afternoon, following scattered train delays systemwide during the morning rush hour.

The railroad said residue from crushed leaves on the rails had led to slippery conditions and trains were traveling at reduced speeds as a precaution.

Newsday reported the recurring slippery leaves problem on Nov. 5. Even though the LIRR has outlined remedies for the problem through its LIRR Forward service improvement initiative, the problem seems to persist. In addition, the LIRR said it expected to roll out last week its brand-new "LaserTrain" — a $370,000 piece of equipment that, according to the manufacturer, Amsterdam-based Laser Tribology BV, uses "high-intensity lasers to remove the slippery top layer from the tracks."

In an unrelated issue on the Montauk branch, buses were replacing midday trains between Patchogue and Montauk, part of regularly scheduled work, the LIRR said.
