LIRR: Train service close to normal after signal problems lead to service suspension, delays

Most trains are on or close to schedule after a signal problem during the evening rush led to the suspension of westbound service on the Hempstead branch of the Long Island Rail Road and cancellations of about 20 trains, the LIRR said.

Westbound Hempstead service was restored about 6 p.m., but riders should expect residual delays of up to 30 minutes east of Hicksville, the commuter rail tweeted.

LIRR starting tweeting at 3 p.m. about the signal problems near Queens Village. Temporary repairs have been made, the railroad said.

The problem led to delays of up to 60 minutes on eastbound trains on the Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches, and up to 90 minutes for westbound trains, the railroad said.

Some trains that had been canceled early on were restored, the LIRR said.
