Normal service for morning rush after service yard derailment, LIRR says

The derailment of an unoccupied Long Island Rail Road train Sunday in the commuter service West Side yard in Manhattan did not affect the Monday commute, a spokesman said.

Crews worked about 12 hours to resolve the derailment of a nine-car train that was returning from a run on Long Island when two of its cars derailed about 3:45 p.m., according to spokesman Aaron Donovan.

At first, the LIRR said that customers might experience delays Monday morning because of the derailment.

However, the situation was resolved at about 3:15 a.m., before the morning rush hour, Donovan said.

"The second and third cars on a nine-car train derailed, just west of Penn Station," Donovan said. "There were no passengers aboard and no injuries."

The LIRR reported mostly good service Monday morning at its site, mta.info, with some delays and a few cancellations in Brooklyn after 8:30 a.m. because of a track condition on the north rail, west of the East New York station.

A spokeswoman said the condition probably was related to cold weather and said service to Brooklyn during the remainder of the morning commute likely would be affected.
