LIRR non-passenger-train derailment in Babylon rail yard delays Wednesday night commute

Two Long Island Rail Road evening rush hour trains were canceled Wednesday following the derailment of a non-passenger train in the Babylon Rail Yard. The Thursday morning rush hour was not expected to be affected.

MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels said the incident occurred at 6:18 p.m. when one of the cars of the train slid off the rails while the train was moving from one track to another.

"Some trains can't get out of the yard, so there is a minimal effect [on commuters]," Daniels said.

Daniels said the 6:46 p.m. train from Penn Station in Manhattan that was due in Babylon at 8:01 p.m. was canceled and that those customers would be able to take the 7:08 p.m. from Penn Station, which arrives in Babylon at 8:20 p.m. She said stops in Woodside, Queens and Lynbrook would be added to accommodate passengers.

The 7:41 p.m. from Penn Station due in Babylon at 8:55 p.m. was also canceled and those customers were able to take the 8:08 p.m. from Penn Station that arrives in Babylon at 9:23 p.m. Stops at St. Albans, Queens, and Lynbrook were added to that train.

"The two trains are probably the only ones this is going to affect," Daniels said. She said repairs on the derailed train were expected to be done Wednesday night.
