A downed wire on a track in Penn Station early Thursday forced the Long Island Rail Road to divert some trains and cancel others, a spokeswoman for the commuter service said.

Ten trains were diverted and at least three trains were canceled before 8 a.m., according to spokeswoman Marjorie Anders.

The downed wire was on Penn Station's Track 6, which is used solely by Amtrak, she said.

Crews completed repairs to the downed wire at about 8 a.m., and an LIRR spokesman said the service resumed a regular schedule shortly after.

The downed wire meant fewer tracks for the service during rush hour, so some trains had to be terminated at Jamaica station and other trains had to take on more customers," Anders said.

In addition to the delays and cancellations, some trains were diverted to Atlantic Terminal or Hunterspoint Avenue, the LIRR said.
