Repairs have been completed on a broken rail east of the Mineola station that caused dozens of delays and several cancellations Wednesday during the morning rush hour, the Long Island Rail Road said.

The delays and canceled trains were mainly on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Oyster Bay branches, the LIRR said.

The repair was announced in an email alert shortly after noon. The alert said the commuter service continues to experience scattered residual delays averaging 5 to 10 minutes.

Shortly after 1 p.m. the railroad said it was on or close to schedule.

The LIRR had said that it would hold off on making the repair until after the morning rush hour.

Spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman said crews would be dispatched to fix the rail at the end of the morning commute.

LIRR officials determined that the rush hour was too busy a time to make the repair, she said.

“It would cause more congestion and more delays,” Gamerman said.

The LIRR first discovered the broken rail at about 5 a.m.; it sent an email at about a half-hour later to alert customers that they could expect westbound delays and cancellations on the three lines throughout the morning commute.

Later, Gamerman said the repair was expected to be completed in time for the afternoon commute.

At about 7 a.m., the commuter service said that it was experiencing westbound delays averaging 10 minutes on each of the three lines.
