The Long Island Rail Road said it was operating on or close to schedule late during Thursday's morning commute, after experiencing systemwide delays earlier in and out of Penn Station.

The delays started as early as 5:45 a.m., after an Amtrak train became disabled in one of the East River tunnels.

The on-or-close update was sent in an email shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Shortly after 8 a.m., the LIRR was reporting westbound delays into Penn Station averaging 15 minutes and eastbound delays out of the station averaging 10 minutes.

The earliest delays were westbound only, on the Ronkonkoma, Hempstead and Babylon lines.
