LIRR urges customers to 'take care when traveling'
Poor weather conditions have the Long Island Rail Road advising customers to be careful when traveling Monday.
The advisory affects all branches, officials said.
In the message to customers, the railroad said: "Please take care when traveling during inclement weather and allow for additional travel time. Customers should use caution when entering and exiting trains, and on platforms and staircases."
Fortunately for rail travelers the weather has had little affect on service Monday, with the LIRR reporting no delays on morning rush-hour trains.
Earlier, service on the Port Washington branch was temporarily suspended -- after an eastbound train struck a person on the tracks east of Woodside station at 3:40 a.m., officials said. The incident involved the 3:18 a.m. train from Penn Station to Port Washington.
Service was suspended until 5:44 a.m., officials said.
Railroad spokesman Aaron Donovan said the victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital with serious injuries.
The victim's identity has not been released.
The 3:18 a.m. train was held and officials said it operated almost two hours late.
The 3:23 a.m. train from Port Washington to Penn was held at Flushing-Main Street as a result of the incident.
