A state audit has found that officials from the Shelter Rock Public Library District did not follow correct procedures when handling bank reconciliations.

The board did not select an official for those tasks who did not have accounting responsibilities and who did not have access to cash, auditors said.

Auditors wrote that the board should make sure that bank reconciliations are handled by someone who does not have accounting responsibilities. The library should also require the treasurer to submit bank reconciliations and supporting documents to board members at monthly board meetings.

The audit reviewed records from Jan 1, 2014, through June 30, 2015.

Library director Andrea Meluskey wrote to auditors in a Dec. 9 letter that the recommendations had been followed.

The library, with 23 full-time and 30 part-time employees, serves 27,000 residents in the Town of North Hempstead. The district had a $4.15 million budget in 2015.

GLEN COVE

The City Council Tuesday night approved a new $1,200-a-month lease to house the office of the Glen Cove Youth Bureau’s After 3 program.

The administrative offices for the after-school program for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade are moving from a smaller space on Forest Avenue where rents had been increasing, Deputy Mayor Barbara Peebles said before Tuesday’s meeting.

“This space is prime, desirable office space,” she said of the new 1 School Street office.

The one-year lease begins Jan. 1.

City spokeswoman Lisa Travatello said the larger office also will be used for some storage, freeing up more space at 128B Glen St., where children’s activities also take place.

“They’re bursting at the seams,” Peebles said of 128B Glen St. “It gives the kids more room.”

About 110 children participate in After 3, which runs for three hours after each school day at Connolly and Landing Elementary schools and Robert M. Finley Middle School, Travatello said.

After 3 provides homework help, introduction to careers and physical activity.
