UNIONDALE
Police say 2 arrested after
they are seen passing gun
Officers responding to a disturbance call in Uniondale arrested two men on weapon-related charges Wednesday, Nassau County police said.
The incident occurred on Jerusalem Avenue and was reported in a 911 call at 11:23 p.m.
Police said that, arriving at the scene, officers spotted two men at the back of a 2004 Honda Odyssey -- one of the men "passing a silver handgun" to the other man, who police said then fled in the vehicle.
During a subsequent vehicle stop, police said the man who had taken the weapon ran, but was arrested after a short foot pursuit. That suspect was later identified by police as Roberto C. Velasquez, 19, of 105 Belmont Pkwy., Hempstead.
A loaded .50-caliber silver Israel Military Desert Eagle handgun was recovered from the front passenger seat of the Honda minivan, police said.
The other man, Allan Ramirez, 20, of 17 Marvin Ave., Hempstead, was arrested a short time later by Hempstead Village police.
Police said that during the arrest, officers found a clear bag "containing one purple, two green pills" and two clear bags "containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine" in one of Ramirez's pants pockets.
Velasquez and Ramirez were each charged with criminal possession of a firearm and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Ramirez additionally was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Both men, who were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, will next appear Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
MINEOLA
Police find man wanted in
summer Flower Hill break-in
A Glen Cove man suspected in an August break-in attempt of a T-Mobile store and who last week led police on a high-speed chase was arrested Wednesday in Mineola on multiple charges, Nassau County police said.
Rashawn Bellamy, 26, of 1438 Avalon Sq., was arrested about 10 a.m. on charges of third-degree burglary, reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and several traffic violations, police said.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead. His next court appearance is set for Monday.
Third Squad detectives said Bellamy tried to break into the T-Mobile store at 1073 Northern Blvd. in Flower Hill on Aug. 27 last year. He ran off when police arrived at the scene but left behind a 2009 Porsche he was driving, detectives said.
On April 9, Third Precinct officers pulled over Bellamy, who was driving a 2011 BMW, on Earle Ovington Boulevard in Uniondale.
According to a news release, "The defendant sped off, leading officers on a high-speed chase. Officers terminated the pursuit."
Police then found Bellamy in the rear of a building on Old Country Road at 10 a.m. Wednesday and arrested him, the release said. EAST MASSAPEQUA
Man resisted during arrest
for shoplifting, police say
A man and woman from Nassau County face drug and shoplifting charges after they were caught stealing Wii game controllers from a Walmart store in East Massapequa on Wednesday, police said.
A Seventh Precinct officer, at the store at 200 Westfield Sunrise Mall on an unrelated shoplifting arrest around 7 p.m., said he saw the two put six Wii controllers into the waistband of the man's pants and into the woman's shopping bag. The officer and a store security guard then stopped the two after they left the store.
The woman complied with the officer's request to accompany them to the security office, but the man did not and "began flailing his arms in an aggressive manner resisting arrest," police said.
During the arrests, both the man and woman were in possession of heroin, police said.
Gregory Insardi, 26, of 226 N. Virginia Ave., North Massapequa, is charged with second-degree robbery, second- and third-degree assault, resisting arrest and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Melanie Hlapatsos, 23, of 15 10th Ave., South Farmingdale, is charged with petty larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Hlapatsos was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Insardi was scheduled for arraignment Thursday.
