Florida woman dies

in red-light crash

A Florida woman was killed in East Northport Sunday after a man ran a red light and hit her car, Suffolk County police said.

About 4:40 p.m., Geraldine Michaelson, 60, was driving west through a green light on Cedar Road near Larkfield Road. Mark Fairchild, 57, of East Northport, was going north on Larkfield, ran a red light and hit her car, police said.

Michaelson, in a 2012 Chevrolet, was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital shortly afterward.

Her 11-year-old granddaughter was treated and released, as was Fairchild, who was driving a 1994 Ford Van.

Police issued Fairchild a summons for driving through a red light.

The investigation is continuing, police said.

Woman charged in stabbing death of her boyfriend, 48

A woman has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the stabbing death of her boyfriend in their Medford home early Sunday, Suffolk County police said.

Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said Cynthia Dean, 32, and Melvin Garcia, 48, had been arguing about "personal matters" much of Saturday. At one point Garcia broke a window in the residence, 643 Granny Rd., Groneman said.

The argument "heated up," he said, and Dean grabbed a steak knife and stabbed Garcia once in the chest about 2:30 a.m. He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

Groneman said Dean has a long criminal record. She and Garcia -- a self-employed painter -- met in January and recently moved in together, he said.

Dean is to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.

MTA police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a 19-year-old Woodside teen found seriously injured on the Long Island Rail Road tracks west of Woodside, in Queens.

The teen, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital, where he died, LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said.

Service on the Port Washington branch was halted in both directions for several hours Saturday night, beginning about 10:15 p.m.

Service on the other lines of the railroad ran express schedules between Penn Station and Jamaica.

Full service was restored at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Arena said.
