Long Island forecast: Rain begins mostly dry Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend

Despite a wet start, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend is shaping up to be chilly and mostly dry.

Temperatures on Saturday are expected to hit the mid-40s, then drop overnight to around 30, said Faye Barthold, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Upton office. There may be a few showers lingering early in the day, Barthold said.

“Once that pushes out, we’re in the clear,” she said.

Highs this time of year tend to run near 38 degrees, Barthold said. Sunday’s high will be closer to the average, around 40, with a low overnight into Monday in the mid-20s.

The holiday will be the coldest day of the holiday weekend, Barthold said. Highs won’t top the upper 20s, and lows will be in the midteens. That weather could lead to a few flurries, she said.
