Saturday morning’s rainfall ceased by midafternoon, and the cloud cover is expected to soon part ways with Long Island as a sunny weekend descends on the metropolitan area.

“The sun is already coming out over parts of New Jersey and New York City,” Carlie Buccola, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Upton bureau, said around 2:15 p.m., when the temperature was at 64 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip. “. . . We’ll be seeing the sun out here on Long Island. The clouds are already breaking up.”

A cold front Friday night dropped temperatures a bit and brought along some rain just before midnight, dropping an “insignificant” amount — about 0.33 inches — at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, Buccola said.

Highs Saturday will be in the mid- to upper 60s, before cooling down into the low 40s Saturday night, Buccola said. Sunday will again be “a nice, sunny day,” with the mercury reaching the low 60s.

The average for this time of year at the airport is a high of 60 degrees and a low at 43 degrees. This weekend’s temperatures are expected to be a few degrees above or below those averages.

The dry weather will continue into Monday until some rain returns on Tuesday, Buccola said.

The Saturday rain “isn’t making much of a dent in the monthly deficit,” Buccola said. Rain totals for this month tallied at the Ronkonkoma airport are 1.63 inches behind normal, Buccola said.

“It’s been a very dry April,” she said. “It’s been a very dry season, overall.”

The lack of rain has dropped the weather service’s drought monitor to its lowest level at “abnormally dry,” Buccola said.

“If we don’t get any more rain, it’ll go to a moderate drought level,” Buccola said. The monitor will be updated next week, she said.
