Long Islanders can look forward to what one forecaster called “a really nice weekend,” with two days of sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s.

Still, that would be a few degrees cooler than the average high for this time of year, which is 76 degrees, said Melissa DiSpigna, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Upton office.

Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, calls it a “good weekend for fall events.”

Still, there are reminders of the powerful and dangerous Hurricane Irma, which is heading toward Florida.

As that storm is expected to make landfall Sunday over southern Florida, “indirect impacts . . .will be felt in the tristate with dangerous rip current development for Atlantic Beaches . . . through the weekend,” the weather service said.

Look for swells from Irma to “maintain rough surf and a high risk of rip currents,” the weather service said.
