Long Island marine forecast: 'Fairly tranquil' for July Fourth weekend

With high pressure building across Long Island on Friday, winds will be light and sea waters will be "fairly tranquil" for most of the Fourth of July weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Light north winds from 5 to 10 knots Friday shifting south and southeast by the afternoon hours, plus 2 to 3 feet swells, are expected, the service's Upton office said.

The winds shift again Saturday, to the east, and increase slightly. The service said conditions could approach small craft advisory levels later Saturday and into Sunday but forecasters didn't have enough confidence to issue an advisory.

"Winds and seas likely remain below small craft advisory levels through the long term period as a weak pressure gradient remains in place, resulting in light winds," the service said.

For beachgoers, inland temperatures Friday across Long Island will reach 80 degrees with plenty of sunshine.

Water temperatures range from nearly 71 degrees at Bergen Point to 66 degrees at Montauk and Kings Point.
