Chance of showers across Long Island waters Friday
With most of Long Island facing the chance of showers, possibly even thunderstorms, Friday is probably not the best day to be headed to the beach -- or out onto local waters.
The National Weather Service is reporting the risk of rip currents is low at area beaches, but categorizes the lightning risk as "moderate" -- and the UV index as "very high."
Surf conditions are expected to be around 2 feet.
Winds and seas are expected to remain below small craft advisory levels for Friday, according to the service's Upton office.
Water temperatures at South Shore beaches are being reported at a still chilly 66 degrees at western beaches, about 64 degrees at central beaches and only about 60 degrees at beaches on the East End on Friday.
The atmospheric pressure was reported at 29.88 inches and falling; light, variable winds are being recorded along the Atlantic shores, with light winds also in the Sound.
