Long Island weather: Saturday to start in 60s, before dipping to 30s

The surge of warmth and sun that began Friday returns Saturday — but its hours are numbered — meteorologists said, adding that they expected a dip in temperature and more cold rain by Monday.

“We’re going to start out the day quite mild but we do have a cold front approaching,” said Nelson Vaz, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Upton.

He described the switch from the mild mid-60s and sunny weather on Long Island to the raw mid-30s and drizzle by nightfall on Saturday as “two halves” of the day.

It gets worse from there as wet weather is a possibility for Saturday night and a near certainty on Sunday, when temperatures will barely reach the mid-40s, Vaz said.

Winds could be trouble too, reaching 15 to 20 mph with some gusts topping 30 mph.

By Monday’s commute, rain, and a considerable amount of it, is in store, and possibly a thunderstorm, Vaz said.

The bright spot lies in the fact that it could get up to 60 degrees Monday, Vaz said, a seasonably normal temperature.

Tuesday is forecast to be dry and warmer, around 50 degrees.
