Long Island weather: Rain, unseasonably warm temps

A rainy Wednesday evening and night, not good news for commuters and last-minute shoppers, is expected to give way to a Christmas Eve day potentially bringing more record-breaking warmth as well as a chance of showers, meteorologist say.
Wednesday’s heaviest widespread rain is expected from the evening commute time up through just past midnight, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton. In all around an inch was forecast for Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
Look for areas of fog in the overnight hours, possibly also for the Thursday morning commute, he said.
Chances for scattered showers on Thursday drop to around 40 percent close to the city, heading down to around 30 percent as you move eastward on Long Island, he said.
As for temperatures, Long Island MacArthur Airport is looking at a possible high of 67 degrees, which would easily do in the record of 60 set in 2014.
The forecast for Christmas Day is for mostly dry skies, with a slight chance of a late night shower, he said. The high temperature for the day could reach 65, with 56 the record, seen in 2014 as well as previous years, the weather service said.
The weekend then presents unsettled weather with varying chances of rain.
