Long Island weather: Friday’s cloudy, cold before winter storm

Friday conditions before an incoming winter storm hits Long Island are expected to be cloudy and cold, the National Weather Service said.

Daily highs in the low 30s are expected, with increasing clouds and windchill values making it feel between 10 and 20 degrees. North winds are calm, from about 7 to 9 mph.

A blizzard warning and coastal flood warning will be in effect for the storm, but it’s not expected to arrive until early Saturday morning — good news for the Friday evening rush hour.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said morning sunshine Friday will give way to afternoon clouds. Snow should begin early Saturday morning after overnight lows in the mid 20s.

Hoffman said although the blizzard warning issued by the service runs until noon Sunday, the heaviest snow during the onslaught will be between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday.

Coastal flooding also will be an issue. Tides will be 2 to 4 feet above normal, Hoffman said.

“Water will be in the street, and some people may not be able to get out of their homes,” he said.

By Sunday afternoon, the storm conditions subside and sunny skies and high temps in the 30s are likely.
