Long Island weather: Thursday’s partly sunny, highs in mid 30s

Partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the low to mid 30s are expected on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, according to the National Weather Service. A west wind at 8 to 16 mph creates windchill factors that will make it feel more like 15 to 25 degrees. Credit: News 12
After a morning in which Long Island commuters saw a few snowflakes, Thursday works out to be mostly dry and partly sunny with daily highs in the low to mid 30s.
The National Weather Service forecast for Nassau and Suffolk counties has mostly dry conditions until Friday night, when rain develops after 10 p.m.
But on Thursday there were reports of snow flurries and dustings in Woodbury and at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, forecasters said.
News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said some Woodbury roads were a little icy just before 7 a.m. And Kevin Kacan, a meteorologist with the service’s Upton office, said MacArthur also had trace amounts of snow.
“Anything heavy or significant fell west and north of New York City,” Kacan said of Thursday morning’s precipitation.
A breezy west wind at 13 to 16 mph makes Thursday feel slightly colder; the windchill values drop temps to between 20 and 25 degrees, the service said.
Nighttime conditions turn mostly cloudy, with lows in the mid 30s. Winds subside to 6 to 11 mph, the service said.
Hoffman said Friday, like most of Thursday, will be a mix of sun and clouds. On Friday, winds from the south and southwest ease up a bit, at 5 to 10 mph; daily highs are in the mid to upper 40s.
Clouds and rain move in Saturday, especially in the morning. Daily highs are in the low to mid 40s.
Hoffman said there could be some snow in the next seven days, starting as early as Sunday night into Monday morning. Hoffman called for a “few snow showers” overnight when temperatures drop into the mid 20s.
