Long Island weather: Showers Monday morning kick off a mixed-weather week

Long Island got a break Sunday from the rain that lashed the region the day before, but don’t put away those umbrellas just yet — more rain is likely during the Monday morning commute, forecasters said.

A "fairly quick system" is moving across the Island, and is expected to bring up to a quarter-inch of rain Monday morning, said Faye Morrone, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. The rain will break around 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. — earlier for those in the west, and later for those out east, she said. 

Then it's projected to clear up, with temperatures reaching the upper 50s and some sunshine, Morrone said. 

Tuesday and Wednesday  bring a much-needed break from the rain after a nor'easter that led to flooding on some parts of Long Island Saturday.

There will be some sun Tuesday, but expect cooler temperatures with highs in the mid-50s.  

Wednesday temperatures could reach the lower 60s with mostly clear skies, Morrone said. 

Another system will be approaching the area Thursday bringing a chance of rain in the afternoon and continuing through Friday and possibly early Saturday morning, she said. 

Temperatures will reach highs in the mid-60s Thursday and lower 60s Friday.

Saturday — the last day before clocks are turned back one hour to mark the end of daylight saving time — is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high of 57.
