Tuesday’s off-and-on light rain is expected to become steadier and more widespread, just in time for the evening commute.

Rainfall isn’t likely to become particularly heavy — just steadier starting around mid-afternoon, said Brian Ciemnecki, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Look for that rain to turn more drizzly at night, he said, with another round of rain expected for Wednesday.

By about 3 p.m. there were delays on arrivals at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman called for cloudy skies and mostly light rain on Tuesday continuing into Wednesday.

“Welcome to meteorological winter,” Hoffman said, noting that the lowest average temperatures traditionally occur from December through February.

The good news: “No snow in the next seven days,” Hoffman said, “and I think the next 10 to 14 days will have above-normal temperatures.”

Daily highs Tuesday are expected to be in the low 50s with a brisk east wind from 14 to 16 mph.

Overnight will be cloudy with light rain and drizzle, Hoffman said.

Rain totals from Tuesday through Thursday morning could be just over an inch, the weather service said.

Highs Wednesday will be in the mid 50s, with morning clouds and showers giving way to sunshine and breezy conditions.
