Man charged with stealing pickup after Bay Shore chase
A Baldwin man led police on a chase in a stolen pickup Tuesday morning on the Southern State Parkway before being caught on a Bay Shore street, State Police said.
Clement Varrecchia Jr., 54, of Baldwin was driving east on the parkway east of Route 109 at 11:09 a.m. in a Dodge pickup. The truck and its license plates had been reported stolen April 30 in Oceanside, police said.
When troopers tried to stop the truck, Varrecchia exited on Bay Shore Road, made several turns, then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence on Manatuck Boulevard, police said.
Varrecchia fled on foot, but he was arrested after a brief struggle, police said.
He is charged with grand larceny and criminal mischief felonies, possession of stolen property, unlawful fleeing from a police officer in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and several traffic violations.
He is being held at Suffolk County's Third Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip.
