A gunman trying to rob another man's gold chain shot him in the leg in Hempstead Wednesday night, Nassau County police said.

Third Squad detectives said the victim, 27, was walking to the Hollywood Deli at 503 S. Franklin St. at 9:59 p.m. when a man approached him and tried to grab his chain. During the attempt, the victim was shot in the leg.

Police said the victim was driven to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.
