Susan Hagedorn's film, first released in 2012, examined factors leading to the attack, which was deemed a hate crime. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Hagedorn and community advocate Joselo Lucero, the brother of the victim.

"We are seeing that hate rhetoric doesn't just affect one group of people like Ecuadorians but many more people," who become targets "because of our values, because of our religion and because of our race," Lucero said.

Event: "Our Town: Ten Years Later."

When: Thursday, Nov. 8, 7 to 9 p.m.

Where: SAC auditorium, Stony Brook University.
