A gas leak Friday night in Babylon forced the evacuation of 24 people from their homes and the temporary closing of a stretch of the LIRR Babylon line.

National Grid received a report at 11:44 p.m. that residents near Trolley Line Road smelled gas in their homes, utility spokeswoman Wendy Ladd said. Five homes were eventually evacuated, but no homes lost service, Ladd said.

Long Island Rail Road service was shut down between Lindenhurst and Babylon from 12:08 a.m. to 1:45 a.m. as crews worked on the problem, an LIRR spokesman said. Trains resumed running on the Babylon line at 1:45, with service back to normal 45 minutes later.

By 2:52 a.m., National Grid crews had fixed the leak, Ladd said.

No injuries were reported.
