The search for a 16-year-old boy who somehow was swept into the water by the Moriches Inlet while fishing at Cupsogue Beach County Park has been suspended, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.
A Good Samaritan tried but could not rescue the teen, who went missing Friday afternoon, officials said.
"Somebody tried to go out and rescue him but was unable to," Coast Guard spokesman Anthony Pappaly said by telephone.
The teen was reported missing at about 4:20 p.m. The Coast Guard looked for him through Friday night and dispatched another crew Saturday morning, Pappaly said.
The Suffolk police marine bureau also looked for him, police said in a Saturday morning statement.
The search was suspended by the Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon and there have been no updates since then, a spokesman said by telephone Wednesday.
The boy’s identity has not been made public.
