Moderate rip current risk at Long Island ocean beaches Friday, forecasters say

There is a moderate risk for rip currents Friday at Long Island's ocean beaches, the National Weather Service said.

Beachgoers can expect water temperatures in the 70s along the South Shore, the service's Upton office said, with wave heights of about 3 feet.

In its marine report, the service said low pressure slowly passing south and east of the ocean waters and high pressure lingering over southern Canada mean increasing northeast winds and a small-craft advisory for the South Shore.

The advisory runs from Friday night to Saturday afternoon and covers Moriches Inlet to Montauk Point; Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet; and Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Fire Island Inlet.

Wave heights could increase to 4 to 6 feet with wind gusts from the northeast and east gusting to 25 knots.
