More than 400 state troopers join post-Sandy effort
As part of a concerted post-superstorm Sandy effort to maintain a strong police presence, State Police superintendent Joseph D'Amico said Thursday the agency has more than doubled the number of troopers on Long Island.
More than 400 troopers from barracks in Ray Brook, Sidney, Oneida, Canandaigua, Middletown, Latham, Poughkeepsie, New York City and Farmingdale are responding to calls in Nassau and Suffolk, State Police said. Those troopers are working with State DEC officers, Forest Rangers, State Park Police and SUNY Police to assist police agencies in both counties, while troopers normally assigned to state thruway patrols are helping escort supplies and equipment.
"State Police are handling hundreds of calls for service from residents asking for help to check on the safety of people who continue to be without power," the agency said.
Additional troopers also were on schedule to arrive on Long Island on Thursday.
