The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, bestowed by the queen upon recommendations by a committee, is the largest British order of chivalry and dates back to 1917.

There are five classes to the order. Barbara Hendrie will be named an officer, which is higher than a member but below the commanders and knight commanders.

The honor is given to people who have notable accomplishments in a variety of fields, from finance to humanitarianism, to arts.

There are more than 100,000 living members of the order.
