Mostly sun predicted for Mother's Day
Good news for those planning to spend some of Mother's Day outdoors: Sunday's forecast is mostly clear with high temperatures expected to reach nearly 70 degrees, the National Weather Service said.
"Sunday, a good chunk of it, will be relatively dry, from about late morning until later in the afternoon," Joey Picca, a meteorologist with the Upton-based service, said Friday. "Generally, it's a dry day with temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s."
Picca said those with outdoor plans for Mother's Day could get an intermittent shower and some clouds as the storm system pushes off Long Island toward the east.
The East End can expect only slightly cooler temperatures and rain perhaps continuing through the morning just a little later than the rest of Long Island, he said.
Most of the weekend, starting Friday night, will be rainy and slightly cooler, Picca said.
For most of Long Island there's a 60 percent chance of rain overnight Friday, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday morning. The rain likely will hang around until about 10 a.m. before a stretch of drier weather runs into late afternoon.
Then, after 3 p.m. Saturday, rain returns, with breezy southwest winds between 15 mph and 21 mph, the service said. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent, with new rainfall amounts of between one-tenth and one-quarter inch.
The Sunday clearing should begin after 7 a.m., Picca said.
"Once people start waking up we should see the rain push off," he said, making for a relatively dry Mother's Day.
