A motorcyclist was killed Sunday night in Shirley after he went through a stop sign without stopping and struck an SUV in the intersection, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The motorcyclist was later identified as 44-year-old Anthony Viola, of nearby Mastic, according to a police news release issued early Monday.

In response to questions, the department's press office wrote: "Detectives checked ring camera footage in the area and were able to determine that the motorcyclist went through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign."

The crash happened at about 7:20 p.m. at the intersection of Clyde and Hounslow roads as Viola, on a Ducati motorcycle he was riding west on Clyde Road, struck the driver’s side door of the SUV, a 2023 Kia, being driven south on Hounslow Road by a 38-year-old Shirley man.

Viola was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was declared dead; The SUV's driver was brought to NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk in Patchogue to be treated for minor injuries, the release said.
