The Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch was still running a little late on Saturday evening, though the delays were much shorter than 45-minute waits seen in the afternoon, the railroad said on Twitter.

Though the railroad at 4:45 p.m. said it had returned departures and arrivals to “on or close” to schedule, about an hour later, it announced the 3:30 p.m. from Montauk would arrive 11 minutes late in Jamaica.

And the 5:53 p.m. train from Speonk due at Jamaica at 7:32 p.m. was canceled.

The reason for the problems dates back to Wednesday night, when smoldering wires near the railroad tracks shut down the William Floyd Parkway in Shirley and suspended rail service there, authorities said, but the situation was under control by about midnight.
