Nassau County will continue its ground spraying next week in selected communities "based on the persistent presence of West Nile virus and mosquito activity at these locations," the health department announced Friday.

Sections of Greenvale, Glen Cove, Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Old Brookville, Roslyn, Roslyn Harbor and Sea Cliff are to be treated Wednesday.

Sections of East Massapequa, Massapequa, Massapequa Park and Seaford are to be treated Thursday.

Treatments are planned, weather permitting, from 8 p.m. to no later than 4 a.m., using the pesticide Scourge, which health officials say has a low chance of causing medical problems.

Nassau and Suffolk counties have been spraying to try to contain West Nile virus, which is spread through bites from infected mosquitoes.

This year there have been two confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Nassau County, including the death of an elderly resident from the Town of Oyster Bay. The county is also reporting 75 mosquito samples that have tested positive for the virus so far in 2012.

The Suffolk County health department Friday announced that two more mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile. The samples, collected between Aug. 25 and Aug. 29, were from Rocky Point and Dix Hills.

So far this year 201 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile. Two human cases of West Nile have been reported so far in Suffolk, and both victims have recovered.
