National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists

Twenty-six high school seniors across Long Island were among about 1,600 students named semifinalists last month for 2013 National Achievement Scholarships for black students, to be issued in the spring by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
About 80 percent of semifinalists nationally will advance to finalist standing, and more than half of those finalists will win one of the competition's 800 scholarships, totaling $2.5 million.
Scholarship winners will be selected based on academic achievements, teacher recommendations and SAT scores, among other qualifications.
The National Achievement Scholarship Program was started in 1964 to recognize academically gifted black students across the country and to provide scholarships to a significant number of them. The competition is privately financed and operates without government assistance.
For this year's competition, more than 160,000 students requested that they be considered for the program when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the fall of 2011, when they were high school juniors.
From the semifinalists, about 1,300 are expected to advance to the finalist level. Finalists will be notified of their designation in January.
The names of 2013 National Achievement Scholarship winners will be publicly released in early April.
