The Town of Newburgh has announced that it is offering a student internship program this summer.

The internship program was announced by Town of Newburgh Supervisor Wayne Booth at the May 2 audit/workshop meeting of the Town Board. According to the town, the office is looking for young people seeking hands-on, real-life experience this summer to serve as student interns with the Town of Newburgh government.

"You learn a lot in school about the world, but it's a whole new ballgame when you have to go out to find a job in government or politics," Booth said in a news release. "Give yourself an edge over your work competition by experiencing a government internship. Internships equip you with the tools and on-the-job training you can use to land your dream job in local, national, international government, or in various areas on education."

Many city officials in Newburgh began as interns in their respective lines of work, including City Councilman Gil Piaquadio.

"Summer internships, in particular, are a good way to get your head out of the books and learn how government works to create the laws that govern our town," Booth said in a news release. "Unfortunately, we cannot pay our interns, but we can offer a great life-enhancing experience. In addition, an internship is a tremendous asset on your resume. You may select which department captures your interest and what hours fit your schedule."

Students interested in summer internships should contact Supervisor Booth at townsupervisor@hvc.rr.com or 845-564-4552.

The Town Hall is located at 1496 Route 300 and can be reached at 845-564-4552.
