Several Newsday journalists shared top prizes in the 2010 Society of the Silurians Excellence in Journalism Awards Competition, clinching honors in print, online, photography, investigative, community service, online breaking news and feature reporting. Founded in 1924, the Society of Silurians describes itself as a group of veteran New York journalists dedicated to excellence and journalistic integrity.

Newsday was specially highlighted by the organization's President's Choice Award for an entry spanning print, online and feature photography. The "The Love and the Heartbreak: Alzheimer's" series was produced by the investigative team, written by reporter Denise Bonilla, shot by photographer J. Conrad Williams Jr., and its multimedia package online edited by Emilio Guerra.

The newspaper's staff took the community service award for "Heroin Hits Main Street," and reporter Delthia Ricks and the Newsday.com staff took an online merit award for "Swine Flu Live Chat."

Reporter Thomas Maier won the investigative reporting merit award for "Fallout: The Legacy of Brookhaven Lab in the Pacific."

Newsday staff took the feature reporting merit award for "The Summer of 69."
