Newsday captured 18 nominations Thursday in the 61st annual New York Emmy Awards competition for a wide range of video and multimedia packages.

The newspaper submitted 34 packages for consideration in the categories of arts, crime, historical/cultural, human interest, military, religion, societal concerns, sports, lifestyle, interactivity, editing and photography.

“These nominations are the result of a creative team that thrives on innovation, collaboration, hard work and never stops striving for excellence,” said Debby Krenek, co-publisher of Newsday. “We are deeply honored.”

The preliminary results of the annual competition, which evaluates work done at area news outlets, were announced Thursday at the studios of CUNY-TV by local media personalities including News 12 Long Island anchor and Emmy winner Elizabeth Hashagen.

News 12 racked up 34 nominations for work done at its six outlets in the region: 11 in Westchester, 11 on Long Island, six in Connecticut, four in New Jersey, one in the Bronx and one in Hudson Valley.

Winners of the awards, conferred annually by the New York chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, will be announced April 14 at The Marriott Marquis in Times Square.
