Newsday, newsday.com, News 12 win press awards
Newsday, newsday.com and News 12 were recognized Monday night for journalistic excellence by the New York Press Club in several categories.
The entries in more than 20 categories were judged by current and former journalists and academics.
Newsday staffers Arnold Miller, Robert Cassidy, Christopher Ware, Peggy Bustamante, David Holland, J. Conrad Williams Jr. and newsday.com staff won the Best Web Exclusive Content award for "A Fighting Chance."
The newspaper won a Superstorm Sandy Special Award for "Sandy's Trail of Ruin on Long Island." Williams, Gordon Grant, Doug Kuntz, James Carbone, Thomas A. Ferrara, Johnny Milano, Daniel Goodrich, Heather Walsh, Alejandra Villa, Charles Eckert, Amanda Voisard, John Paraskevas, Barry Sloan and Danielle Finkelstein completed the project that won the award in the Spot News Photo category.
Newsday.com and Newsday staff also won in the Spot News category for an Internet entry for "Brush Fires Sweep Pine Barrens."
In the Continuing Coverage category, Newsday and newsday.com staffers won a Superstorm Sandy Special Award for an Internet package on the storm. They also won Superstorm Sandy Special Awards for Spot News and Spot News Video.
News 12 Long Island grabbed a Superstorm Sandy Special Award in the Spot News Video category. News 12 New Jersey and News 12 Westchester also won Superstorm Sandy Special Awards in the Continuing Coverage and Feature Video categories, respectively. News 12 Hudson Valley also won a Continuing Coverage award for "Deadly Newburgh Police Shooting."
News 12 Long Island's Jill Wagner, David Leibowitz and Valerie Gildea won an award in the News Special category for television coverage with "Journey of Remembrance," and News 12 Westchester won an award in the Feature Video category for "Laubin's Legacy."
Newsday's Rick Brand won the award for Political Coverage with an article titled "The $300G Commish." The newspaper, newsday.com, and its editorial board also won a Special Event Reporting award for Internet coverage of "Presidential Candidates Come to Hofstra."
News 12 Long Island's Virginia Huie won a Sports News award for "Eyes on the Prize."
